Adjusting to New Dentures: A Practical Guide

Discover tips, timelines, and simple strategies to make your transition to new dentures comfortable and confident.

New dentures feel unfamiliar for the first few weeks while your mouth adjusts — this settles. A few habits make the settling-in period easier.

Settling in

  • Eating: start with soft foods cut into small pieces, and chew on both sides at once to keep the denture stable. Reintroduce firmer foods gradually.
  • Speaking: some sounds may feel different at first. Reading aloud for a few minutes a day helps your tongue and cheeks adapt.
  • Saliva: you may notice more saliva early on — this settles as your mouth gets used to the denture.
  • Cleaning: rinse and brush the denture daily with a soft brush, and take it out at night to let your gums rest.
  • Adhesive: a denture adhesive can add confidence while you adjust, if you find it helpful.

When to see the dentist

If a sore spot develops and doesn't settle, see the dentist — a small adjustment usually fixes it. Don't try to file or reshape the denture yourself.
